A: Simply put, Vermiculture is the raising or "farming" of worms.
A: It is a simple way to reduce waste into a usable, environmentally friendly, product. It is an organic technique. It's just down right, good ol' dirty fun for kids, parents and grandparents alike.
A: After your initial start-up, it is perpetually free! Initial start-up costs are less than $70.00 for a complete, established farm with worms.
A: It is a safe alternative to chemical pesticides and fertilizers. In all my life, I know of no recorded case of red worms hurting adults or children, but I have seen children driven to a point, that they have eaten worms! (Strange but true.) There is even a kid's book that talks of frying them... yuck.
A: Although there are many, many species of worms, the red wiggler or European nightcrawler are best for composting. The critters on the sidewalk, when it rains, are typically night crawlers. They burrow 8-12' and are prone to leave, just 'cause they can. Reds and Euros will stay around if there is food and moisture.
A: Red Wigglers and Euros are adaptable to both inside bins, as well as, outdoor piles.
